Gamer Space Takes Home the Meet and Code Award in Diversity

Women and Gender Minorities in Gaming and Tech. Meet and Code Award 2024

At Sorora e.V., we believe that access to technology is a fundamental right and that gaming and coding should be spaces of innovation, inclusion, and empowerment. That’s why we are incredibly proud to announce that our project Gamer Space: Empowerment Through Video Games has won the Meet and Code Award 2024 in the category Diversity!

This recognition highlights the impact of our work in creating safe, creative, and empowering digital spaces for FLINTA individuals (women, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, and agender people) with migration backgrounds. It also reaffirms the urgency of ensuring equal opportunities in the gaming and tech industries, where women and marginalized communities remain vastly underrepresented.

Why Gaming Matters for Inclusion

Gaming is one of the most powerful creative and technological platforms of our time. It shapes narratives, develops skills, and influences culture. However, access to gaming and coding is often limited for girls, women, and gender minorities due to systemic barriers, gender stereotypes, and a lack of representation.

With Gamer Space, we set out to change that. Funded by the Jugend- und Familienstiftung des Landes Berlin, this project provided young FLINTA individuals with migration backgrounds a unique opportunity to explore game development, digital storytelling, and technology in an inclusive and supportive environment.

What Was Gamer Space?

Hosted at Bardo Projektraum, Gamer Space was a multi-month program offering:
Workshops in game design, coding, and storytelling using tools like Twine, Godot, and Construct.
Excursions to gaming spaces like the Computerspielemuseum and Xperion, exposing participants to industry insights and inspiration.
Mentorship from professionals in gaming and digital media, supporting technical learning and personal growth.
The Gamer Space Game Jam, a culminating event where participants collaborated to create games addressing discrimination and social justice themes.

A Legacy of Commitment

This is not the first time our work has been recognized at the Meet and Code Awards:

🏆 Meet and Code Award 2021 – Girls do IT!
Our No More Fairy Tales: Video Game Workshop, Rebel Narrative, and Coding for Girls program was honored for its innovative approach to teaching coding and storytelling while building confidence and resilience among girls in tech.

At Sorora e.V., we know that technology is not neutral. It is shaped by those who create it. That’s why we are committed to breaking down barriers in tech education and gaming, ensuring that women, girls, and gender minorities are not just players, but also creators, designers, and decision-makers in digital spaces.

Looking Ahead

Winning the Diversity Award 2024 for Gamer Space strengthens our mission to expand access to gaming and coding. We will continue developing programs like CyberCamp, pushing for equal opportunities, representation, and empowerment in the digital world.

A huge thank you to Meet and Code, Amazon, our mentors, participants, and everyone who believes in a more inclusive future in gaming and technology.
